Compute Nodes Setup

Connect additional machines to scale processing capacity. Nodes dial out to this server — no firewall changes required on the node side.

⚡ One-Liner Auto-Install (Recommended)

Automatically installs Node.js, netcdf-studio-node, configures, and starts as a background service.

curl -fsSL http://admin.localhost:3000/netcdf-studio-node.sh | bash -s -- --server http://admin.localhost:3000 --token YOUR_API_TOKEN

Click to copy • Works on Linux, macOS, and Windows (Git Bash/WSL)

Manual Installation

Prerequisites

Node.js v18+ on the remote machine
Python 3.9+ for Compute role jobs

Step 1 — Install the agent

npm install -g netcdf-studio-node

Step 2 — Enrol the node

Go to System → Infrastructure, click Enrol Node, fill in name and roles, then copy the one-time token before closing the dialog.

Step 3 — Start the agent

NETCDF_NODE_TOKEN=<token> netcdf-studio-node --server https://your-server.example.com

Pass the token via environment variable to keep it out of shell history and process lists.

Node Roles

Role	What It Does
Compute	Receives and runs processing jobs via Python worker.
Storage	Holds cold archive files; frees primary server disk.

Agent Flags

Flag	Description
--server <url>	Base URL of this server. Required.
--token <token>	Node token from the Enrol dialog. Prefer `NETCDF_NODE_TOKEN` env var.
--name <label>	Display name in the Nodes panel. Defaults to hostname.
--concurrency <n>	Max simultaneous jobs (server enforces the enrolment limit).
--python <path>	Python interpreter path. Defaults to `python3`.

Security Notes

Node tokens are shown once only and stored HMAC-hashed. If lost, enrol a new node.
Nodes connect outbound only — the server never initiates connections to node machines.
Job scratch directories are deleted immediately after each job completes.
Credentials (GEE keys, CDS tokens) arrive over the encrypted socket and go into the worker environment — never written to disk or passed via argv.
